Induction Spotlight- Carmen Carcone
2001 Coach to be inducted to HOF July 18
As the first manager in Newport Gulls
history following the franchise's move to
Newport in 2001, Carcone helped usher
in a new era at historic Cardines Field.
Under his leadership, the Gulls posted a
25-15 regular season record and captured
the franchise's first-ever New England
Collegiate Baseball League championship,
immediately establishing Newport as a
powerhouse in the league.
Known for his baseball knowledge,
leadership, and ability to connect with
players, Carcone helped create the
winning culture that would define the Gulls
for decades to come. His 2001 team not
only brought a championship to Newport
in the organization's inaugural season in
the city, but also helped ignite the fan support and community atmosphere that
transformed the Gulls into one of the NECBL's marquee franchises.
Carcone's coaching career extended far beyond Newport. He previously served
as head coach at Dowling College, where he led the program to five consecutive
conference championship appearances and earned Coach of the Year honors. He
later managed the Orleans Cardinals to a Cape Cod League championship and
was named the league's Manager of the Year. Carcone also coached at University
of Maryland and other collegiate programs throughout his career, building a
reputation as one of the game's respected baseball minds.
For his impact on the organization and his role in delivering the first championship
in Newport Gulls history, Carmen Carcone remains one of the most influential
figures in franchise history and a cornerstone of the team's early success.
Carmen resides in Woodstock, Georgia with his wife Amanda, his son Geno who
plays hockey in the OHL and his daughter Nina who will be attending U of Florida
to play softball in August.
