Gulls Dominate in 10-0 Win Over Blue Sox
Newport ends the week on back to back wins after defeating Valley
After a commanding 10-6 win against the Danbury Westerners at home Friday night, the Newport Gulls were able to tie a bow on the week in Holyoke, Massachusetts on Saturday. In nine innings of domination, the Gulls soared to a 10-0 win in a South Division Showdown against the Valley Blue Sox.
The fun for Newport started from the jump, as the Gulls broke the game open with five runs in the top of the first. Braxton Tramel (Eastern Carolina) and Adam Broski (Michigan State) both came away with RBI base hits, fueling the offensive success.
While Newport added another run in the second, the scoring really picked back up in the top of the fifth when the first seven batters of the inning all reached safely, six via basehits. Doubles from Gus Gandy (Samford), Brandon Larson (Southern California), and Ryan Novak (Miami Ohio) all fueled what ended as a four run frame.
The offensive performance continued what has been a strong back-half of the week, with three straight double-digit scoring performances. The pitching was equally phenomenal in the winning effort. Jake Lenahan (Holy Cross) made his second start of the season and didn’t disappoint. The right hander tossed six innings of shutout, no-hit baseball while raking up six strikeouts.
The bullpen backed up the performance with Victor Frederick (St. John’s) and John Mass (Florida Atlantic) combining for the final three innings. The two arms allowed just two combined hits while adding on an additional six strikeouts, keeping the Blue Sox off the board.
The win gave the Gulls a 4-2 finish on the week as they’re treated to an off day on Sunday. Newport hosts the North Division’s North Adams SteepleCats at home on Monday as the Gulls aim to get back above .500.
