Newport Snaps Two Game Skid on Road Against Mystic
Gulls smash two homers in dominant win over south division rival
While the July 4th contest between the Newport Gulls and Mystic Schooners was cut short after just five innings of play, it still had its fair share of fireworks. The Gulls snapped a two game losing streak in 7-1 fashion, with the one-two punch of strong pitching and long balls the name of the game.
Jake Lenahan (Holy Cross) made his fourth start of the season and continues to be a top arm across the entire NECBL. Through three innings, Lenehan allowed just one run off of two hits, striking out three.
Newport's bats supplied an early lead in the second—their highest scoring frame of the season. After loading the bases, Mason Ligenza (Pittsburgh) delivered his first homerun of the summer. And if a grand slam wasn't enough,Tristan Salinas (Rutgers) delivered his third homerun of the week to deep left center field, this time a three run blast.
Victor Frederick (St. John's) came in for relief, highlighting the depth of Newport's pitching staff. The righty forced back-to-back scoreless frames and held the Schooners offense at bay.
Fireworks in the form of lightning rolled in and ultimately led to the end of play, but not before the completion of five innings, making it an official contest per NECBL rules. The Gulls look to pick up some momentum from this win as they return to Cardines Monday night to face the Danbury Westerners. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm with streaming available on NECBL+.
