NEWPORT RI: March is here, and the Newport Gulls are just under three months from another season of baseball at Historic Cardines Field. General Manager Chuck Paiva and Vice President Chris Patsos have been working on building the baseball team, but now the organization begins to shift focus and works to secure a volunteer team for the 2025 Summer. As a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit, the Gulls rely on volunteers to help execute the ballpark preparation and operations. Specifically, opportunities are available to join the Gulls Grounds Crew, Souvenir Stand, and Ticket Booth staff.
“Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Gulls organization”, said General Manager Chuck Paiva. “It would be impossible to operate without Host Families, Volunteers, and College Interns”, Paiva continued.
The Gulls feature three (3) volunteer sections: Ticket Booth Volunteers, Souvenir Stand Volunteers, and Grounds Crew Volunteers. Each position is as important as the next, and the Gulls are looking to fill these volunteering efforts before the beginning of the season!
Ticket Booth Volunteers can expect to arrive at Cardines Field between 4:30pm-4:45pm before gates open at 5:00pm. Ticket Booth Volunteers are tasked with facilitating ticket sales (cash and credit) from the time gates open, to the 6th inning.
Souvenir Stand Volunteers can also expect to arrive to Cardines between 4:30pm-4:45pm and are tasked with facilitating souvenir sales beginning when the gates open at 5:00pm. Souvenir Stand Volunteers will work alongside the Gulls Director of Retail and Inventory/Retail Manager.
Lastly, the Gulls are also in need of Grounds Crew Volunteers to help get Cardines Field in pristine shape leading up to each game! After the City prepares the field for the Gulls on Summer mornings, it is up to the Gulls' Grounds Crew to get the diamond in pristine and game-ready condition following pregame batting practice and warmups. The Crew also touches up the playing surface during the 5th Inning. Grounds Crew Volunteers can expect to arrive to Cardines Field at around 3:00pm to begin pre-game duties.
The 2026 season is set to kick off on Thursday, June 4th as the Gulls look to begin yet another hunt for the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup. The Gulls are slated to take on the Valley Blue Sox in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The Gulls will celebrate Opening Night at Cardines Field the following day on June 5th against the Upper Valley Nighthawks. Home Games are played at Historic Cardines Field in the heart of Newport on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Ticket Booth/Souvenir Stand Volunteers are NOT expected to be available for every game; the Gulls are ready to work around YOUR schedules!
Each volunteer will receive a parking pass, meal voucher pass, and a special discount on ALL Gulls swag. Being a part of the Gulls Family as a member of the Grounds Crew or Volunteer Staff makes for a special summer. The Gulls encourage all who are interested in helping in either capacity, or to simply learn more about any volunteer position to contact Eric Lindley at operations@newportgulls.com, or by calling 401-363-2134.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are eight-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
