NEWPORT RI.I - It was a crazy day at Cardines Field as just a few hours before first pitch the tarp was on the field and it was raining heavily. Luckily, the game still went on and the field was in good shape to have the Newport Gulls host the Valley Blue Sox for the last time this season. It was a tight game from the first inning to the last.
The game started with a great double play by Gulls infielder Colby Wallace (ECU) in the first inning to save extra bases and only allow one run,
In the bottom of the first, Newport's bats came alive and a double from Matthew Bolton (Binghamton) and a 2 RBI single by Colby Wallace would give the Gulls the lead.
On the mound for Newport was Leighton Harris (Kentucky) and Harris brought his best stuff throwing 5 innings of 1 run baseball and only allowing 2 hits, shutting down the Blue Sox bats for half of the game.
The Gulls would add onto their lead in the 5th with a pair of RBI singles from Andreaus Lewis (Manhattan) and Matt Ossenfort (Michigan) to extend their lead to 5-1.
CJ Bott (UCLA) and Jake Gregor (Louisville) pitched in the relief innings for the Gulls allowing a few runs to come in but got out of key jams when they needed to and kept their lead going into the 9th where Marcel Kulik (Virginia Tech) came in to try and close the door but the Valley bats said otherwise.
Sebastian Mexico crushed a 2 run homerun off Kulik to tie the game up 5-5 and force extra innings, where Valley would get 1 run in the top of the tenth inning and take home the win on the road against a strong Newport team.
After an off day on Thursday, the Gulls are back at Cardines Field on Friday, July 11th as they host the Bristol Blues for an interconference game as Newport looks to get back into the winning streak, especially against a tough team in Bristol. This game can be watched on ESPN+ at 6:35 pm with the pregame starting at 6:30 pm.

The Gulls are eight-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
